George Nettles, Denver CO – I saw this terrific article written by Jacqui Heinrich, Reporter/Multimedia Journalist for KOAA, News 5 and it hit home for me, as I had a closing set for Wednesday, June 12 on a beautiful home in the Black Forest. The fire started the day before and it just grew so fast and furious that it was unbelievable! Needless to say, the closing was cancelled and the home suffered heavy smoke damage and the out buildings burned. My monetary loss was nothing compared to the suffering and losses of over 511 home owners including two that died!
People displaced by the Black Forest fire may run into trouble finding rental homes.
“Economist Ryan McMaken with the Colorado Division of Housing says apartment and single-family home rentals are hard to come by as it is. In the last ten years there’s been little new construction in the city and county, and that combined with a growing number of people looking for temporary housing already caused rental availability to go down and prices to go up. The hundreds of people out of their homes from the fire will only add to the problem, says McMaken. “Certainly for people who are going to be looking right now for a house to rent in certain parts of the city it does seem that in the short term that will have a very real effect,” McMaken told News 5.
“The good news is some apartment communities are trying to make things easier on fire victims by waiving application fees, pet rent, and offering a flat rate for utilities in some cases.”
