For the Daniels & Fisher (D&F) clock tower, built in 1931, the Fuller Sotheby’s Press Release says it all:
“The person who lives here will not only own the most unique residence in all of Denver, but will also achieve a sense of history,” said Mike Urbana, the original owner of the clock tower residence, and one of the key caretakers of the D&F clock tower building for the past 25 years (along with Richard Hentzell. “This building represents the spirit and attitude of Denver in countless respects, with a true, understated and ‘ruggedly’ elegant design. It is an important representation and anchor of American West architecture.”
Designed by Denver architects Frederick Sterner and George Williamson, the D&F Tower has been described as a “monument by which Denver will be known” (Major John Daniels, an original founder of one of Denver’s most important and original business ventures, the May D&F stores). Situated at the corner of Arapahoe and 16th, the clock tower was Denver’s first tallest building, and helped to set the stage for the growth and popularity of the Rocky Mountain Region.
“I visited the clock tower and its department store regularly as a child, and my mom told me ‘you have to save it’,” said Urbana. “Her words became an important driving force for me. Based on the heartfelt work of many people during the past 100-plus years, the clock tower has been saved and established as an historic Western landmark.”
